Jaanipäev (24. juuni) on kristuse-eelsest ajast pärinev iidne suvepüha.
Eesti rahvakalendris tähistas jaanipäev suvist pööripäeva, samuti kevadiste põllutööde lõppu ja heinateo algust, paljud vanad jaanipäevakombed on olnud seotud karjandusega. Jaanipäeva eelõhtul (jaaniõhtul) kaunistati toad noorte kaskedega ning süüdati jaanituled, mille ümber noored rõõmupeole kogunesid – tantsima, ühismänge mängima, üle tule hüppama, sõõmu koduõlut maitsma.
Pärimuse kohaselt põlevad jaaniööl rahaaugud ja õitseb sõnajalg. Sõnajalaõie leidmine arvati toovat suurt õnne, metsas seda otsimas käidi aga enamasti paariviisi …
Tänapäeval tähistatakse jaanipäeva kui traditsioonilist suvepüha võimaluse korral looduse rüpes jaanitule ümber lõbutsedes; mitmel pool pruulitakse jaanipäevaks koduõlut. Erilise võlu lisab jaaniööle teadmine, et see on aasta lühim, kui päike loojub vaid mõneks tunniks ja päris pimedaks ei lähegi.
St. John's Day (24 June) is a very old midsummer festival dating back to pre-Christian times. In Estonian folk calendar St. John's day marked the summer solstice as well as the end of spring field work and the beginning of the haymaking period; many of the customs were decorated with young people gathered there to make merry - to dance around the fire, to play game, yo jump over the fire and to have a mug or two of home-brewed beer. According to an old belief, fires light up on St. John's Night where hidden treasure lies buried, and the fern blossoms at midnight. Finding the fern flower is believed to bring great luck, and young people leave the fire in pairs and go looking for it ... Today, St. John's Eve is marked as a traditional midsummer festival with merrymaking round a bonfire in some picturesque spot; in many parts of the country home-made beer is brewed specially for the occasion. The shortness and lightness of the night when the sun dips below the horison only for a few hours and it never actually gets dark lends a special charm to the festival.
